CHKD CEO Accepts Position in Texas

HAMPTON ROADS, Va. -- Robert I. Bonar Jr., Dr. H.A., president and CEO of Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters Health System, announced today that he has accepted the position of president at Children's Hospital of Austin in Texas. He will continue at CHKD through December 6, 2002. Dr. Bonar joined CHKD in September 1994. "During his tenure, he has led a period of remarkable growth, ensuring that CHKD's unique services reach into communities throughout the region," said Richard D. Roberts, chair of the Health System board. Dr. Bonar is credited with establishing CHKD Health Centers in Chesapeake and Norfolk and with the establishment of CHKD's Medical Group and Surgical Group practices that employ more than 80 pediatricians and pediatric surgical specialists with offices throughout Hampton Roads and northeastern North Carolina. Dr. Bonar also oversaw the creation of Children's Health Network, an organization of closely allied community pediatricians, specialists and surgeons working together to make children's health a priority among insurance companies and employers in our service area. The expansion continues, with plans under way to build multi-service Health Centers in Newport News and Virginia Beach. Roberts continued, "Bob has seen the organization through challenges that have hit CHKD from all directions - declining reimbursements, a troubling economy and work force shortages. And he has put us on a path to overcome these growing hurdles, proving himself to be an effective advocate for Children's Hospital at the local, state and national levels." Roberts concluded, "Bob has stayed true to the mission of Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters, and his time will be remembered for the depth and breadth of services that were brought to neighborhoods near and far, of national recognition where CHKD was ranked among the nation's best, and of sound management and strong leadership. He will be missed." "It has been an honor and a privilege to serve the Hampton Roads community through my role at Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters," Bonar said. "When I first arrived, I was struck by the community's overwhelming respect and admiration for CHKD, and as I prepare to leave, I am still awed by the generosity and devotion expressed toward our hospital. I recognize that I was in charge of the crown jewel of Hampton Roads, and to this day feel humbled by that responsibility." While at Children's Hospital, Bonar earned his doctorate in Health Administration and Policy from the Medical University of South Carolina. He joined CHKD after serving as administrator of both integrated services and the children's hospital at MUSC's Medical Center in Charleston. Dr. Bonar joins Children's Hospital of Austin, part of Seton Healthcare Network, a division of Ascension Health, on January 6.
