HAMPTON ROADS, Va.-Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters will conduct a free workshop for parents about talking to their children during turbulent times on Jan. 21, 6:45-8:15 p.m., in the hospital's Brickhouse Auditorium, 601 Children's Lane, Norfolk.
A panel of local experts will focus on recent world events and their impact on children, as well as offer suggestions for helping ease a child's stress and fear. Participants will hear how children of different ages process and react to frightening information and how adults can help minimize the negative impact. In addition, they will gain insight into the media's strategy for providing breaking news, learn how law enforcement officers are trained to respond to crises and find out what programs are available to military families in preparation for deployment.
Guest experts include: Patrick Bateman, Ph.D., director of clinical services at the Barry Robinson Center; Regina Mobley, WVEC TV13 news anchor; Chris Amos, public information officer for the Norfolk Police Dept.; and Yvette Stevenson, parent educator with the Navy's Fleet and Family Services.
The program is free and open to the public, but advance registration is required. To register or for more information call CHKD's Children's Health Line at (757) 668-7500.
