CHKD Names New CEO
NORFOLK, Va. -- The board of directors of Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters Health System today announced that James D. Dahling will become the organization's new president and CEO, effective December 16, 2002. Dahling, CHKD's chief operating officer, replaces Robert I. Bonar, Jr., who is leaving Children's Hospital in December to become president of Children's Hospital of Austin in Texas.
"Jim has proven himself to be a strong and effective leader, and we are thrilled that he has accepted an even greater role within our organization," said Richard D. Roberts, chairman of the CHKD Health System board of directors. " The board is extremely impressed with Jim's vision and his strategic mindset. He's what we call a true consensus builder; he has the reputation of listening, synthesizing and coming up with solutions that everyone can live with," Roberts continued.
"This is a wonderful opportunity at an amazing institution," Dahling said. "Children's Hospital has been part of my life for nearly nine years now, so to have the confidence of the board to lead CHKD in this role is a true honor. And having been a part of this community for so many years, I am keenly aware that Children's Hospital is a precious resource that must be carefully tended and preserved." Dahling continued, "We have one of the finest children's hospitals in the country and the most talented and dedicated physicians and employees you'd find anywhere. It's my goal to keep us that way -- to recruit and retain the best and the brightest, to serve the children and to serve them well."
Dahling joined Children's Hospital in January 1994 as Vice President of Operations. By the end of that year, he had been named Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for the Health System. As COO, Dahling has been responsible for the overall management of all clinical, ancillary, facility and support services for CHKD as well as for the organization's Medical Group and Surgical Group practices.
Prior to joining Children's Hospital, Dahling was a Senior Vice President at Richmond Memorial Hospital from 1987 through 1993 and held senior level management positions at hospitals in Texas and Minnesota.
Dahling holds a master's degree in health administration from the Medical College of Virginia at Virginia Commonwealth University, a master's degree in nursing administration from the University of Minnesota and a bachelor's degree in nursing from Winona State University (MN).
Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters, a not-for-profit hospital with a century-long commitment of caring for children, was established near downtown Norfolk in 1961. During the decades, it has evolved and expanded with the growing needs of the community, and today provides care to nearly 130,000 children each year as inpatients and outpatients, addressing routine and complex illnesses, injuries and chronic conditions. CHKD, Virginia's only freestanding acute care hospital dedicated exclusively to children, serves as the region's referral center for pediatrics and provides a multitude of unique services within greater Hampton Roads and northeastern North Carolina. The CHKD Health System also operates primary care pediatric practices, surgical practices, multi-service Health Centers and satellite offices throughout its service region.
