Telethon Celebration Generates Record Amount For CHKD
HAMPTON ROADS, Va.- Dozens of companies, organizations and individuals in Hampton Roads and WVEC-TV Channel 13 viewers raised a record $2,202,261 for Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters during the 19th Annual Children's Miracle Network Telethon Celebration broadcast live on WVEC Sunday from the hospital lobby. Money raised from this year's event will be used to purchase vital medical equipment, support programs and services for patients and families and fund groundbreaking pediatric research.
Annually, more than 5,500 children from all over Hampton Roads are treated as inpatients at CHKD and nearly 80,000 as outpatients. The hospital's emergency center cares for an additional 35,000 children each year.
The 12-hour broadcast was hosted by WVEC personalities Regina Mobley, David Alan, Jeff Lawson, LaSalle Blanks, Sandra Parker, Craig Moeller and Scott Cash.
Representatives from the many local businesses and organizations that raised funds for CHKD throughout the year presented their gifts, and patients and families who've relied on CHKD during times of illness, injury and crisis shared their stories with viewers.
"CHKD is so blessed with the generous support of the community," said Beth Duke, the hospital's senior vice president for community relations. "We thank everyone who raised money for the hospital during the last year, every family that so graciously shared their story with the community and everyone who called in a pledge in support of the hospital. This money will go a long way towards helping the hospital provide the best medical care and healing environment for its patients."
Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters is the only facility of its kind in Virginia, serving the medical and surgical needs of children throughout greater Hampton Roads, the Eastern Shore of Virginia and northeastern North Carolina.
