Farm Fresh "Round Up" Nets $285,650 For CHKD Childhood Cancer Program
HAMPTON ROADS, Va.- Farm Fresh associates, customers and vendors teamed up March 13 - April 6 during a unique in-store fundraiser to collect $285,650 to help children with cancer at Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters.
The "Round Up" was designed so customers at store checkout counters could easily and conveniently round up on their grocery tape the total of their purchase to the next even dollar (or add additional dollars), with the difference going toward CHKD's childhood cancer program. Farm Fresh customers and vendors contributed $160,650 during this year's 3 1/2-week effort; the Farm Fresh Charitable Foundation added the additional $125,000 pledged to match customer contributions.
This year's campaign was the third annual "Round Up" Farm Fresh has held to benefit CHKD, and the second in a row the proceeds were designated for the hospital's cancer program. As additional contributions are received from Farm Fresh vendors over the next few weeks, this year's gift is expected to grow and exceed the nearly $314,000 raised last year, bringing the two-year total to well over $600,000 for the CHKD childhood cancer program.
"It was an ambitious undertaking," stated Ron Dennis, president and chief operating officer of Farm Fresh, "but our valued and exceptional Farm Fresh associates, customers and vendors really came through for the children of Hampton Roads. There is no better cause than helping children in our community fight cancer. And our team couldn't have done it without the invaluable help of our co-sponsors from The Virginian-Pilot, the Daily Press and WVEC TV 13."
CHKD president and chief executive officer Bob Bonar, also praised the effort. "The hundreds of children from southeastern Virginia, northeastern North Carolina and the Eastern Shore with life-threatening childhood cancers we care for at Children's Hospital will benefit immensely from the generous efforts and wonderful teamwork of Farm Fresh's customers, vendors and associates. Because of their special commitment, these children special will be able to continue their fight right here in Hampton Roads and with the best resources available anywhere." In the United States, approximately 8,700 children are diagnosed annually with cancer. It is the leading cause of death from disease in children under the age of 15, and an estimated 1,700 children across the country die each year as a result.
Children's Hospital follows about 500 childhood cancer patients, and every year, about 50 local children are newly diagnosed with some form of the disease.
Although the cause for most childhood cancers is not known, many occur very early in life, and the immaturity of children's organ systems often has important treatment implications. So it is important to have a dedicated program and a team of specialists who know the differences between adult and childhood cancers, as well as the unique needs of children with a life-threatening disease.
The team at Children's Hospital includes pediatric oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists, pediatric oncology nurses, specially trained psychologists, social workers, child life specialists, nutritionists, rehabilitation therapists and educators who can support and educate the entire family.
And in addition to offering highly specialized staff, facilities and equipment on both an inpatient and outpatient basis, CHKD offers children with cancer the opportunity to participate in the most current and advanced clinical research trials through the Children's Cancer Group, an international cooperative research organization. Farm Fresh is a SUPERVALU company. SUPERVALU is the nation's largest food distributor to supermarkets and the 10th largest supermarket retailer. Farm Fresh employs more than 4,500 associates and has 37 stores, primarily in Hampton Roads.
