"Sideline Sensibility" Program Focuses On Making Sports Fun For Children
Hampton Roads, Va--A free program for coaches and parents emphasizing positive and fun sports experiences for children will be held February 11, 6:30-8:30 p.m., at the Bow Creek Community Recreation Center, 3427 Clubhouse Road in Virginia Beach.
The program, titled "Sideline Sensibility," is designed to help coaches and parents learn realistic expectations about children's abilities and the sport they're playing. The featured guest, Hampton Roads Mariners head coach Shawn McDonald, also will discuss how to talk to kids about winning and losing. And a medical specialist from CHKD Surgical Group's Orthopedics and Sports Medicine practice will discuss common youth sports injuries and how to avoid them. Free pizza and soda will be served
According to the National Institute for Child Centered Coaching, 72 percent of all children between 8 and 13 years of age drop out of organized sports. This free program is designed to help parents and coaches understand why that happens and how to make every child's sports experience rewarding and enjoyable.
The program is co-presented by Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters and the Virginia Beach Parks and Recreation Department. For more information about the program, call Jane Jagodzinski, VBPR, at 427-2106 ext. 236. To register for the program, call Children's Health Line at 668-7500.
