CHKD Named Among 20 Best Children's Hospitals in the U.S.

HAMPTON ROADS, Va.-In a recent ranking by Child magazine of the nation's best hospitals for children, Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters was ranked twentieth out of the 178 member hospitals of the National Association of Children's Hospitals and Related Institutions. In its Web site ( and February issue, Child magazine featured rankings based on Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations evaluations and results from a survey that looked at:
  • Cancer survival rates
  • Quality of doctors and nursing staff
  • Availability of pediatric specialists
  • Scope of the organ transplant program
  • Number of clinical research trials
  • Availability of support groups, and
  • Extent of the Child Life program for the emotional needs of patients
  • "Child magazine…recruited a six-member medical advisory board…that would evaluate hospitals based on hard data," the magazine reported. "Child's exclusive survey reveals which pediatric hospitals are tops in the country-and why." In response to the ranking, CHKD president and chief executive officer Bob Bonar said, "We're proud of the recognition for the great job Children's Hospital does for the children of Hampton Roads.
