October Classes, Programs and Lectures

  • Oct. 7, 14 and 21 – Mommy, Daddy and Me Playgroup. Fee: $30. 6:30-7:30 p.m., CHKD Health Center, 850 Southampton Ave., Norfolk. Three-week series provides parents a fun, interactive way to learn about their baby’s growth and development.
  • Oct. 11 – Safe Sitters Class. Fee: $35. 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m., CHKD’s Discovery Care Center, 811 Redgate Ave., Norfolk. For 11- to 14-year-olds who want to learn how to become safe and nurturing baby sitters.
  • Oct. 16 – When Children Lose Control: Helping Your Child Manage Anger. Free. 7-8:30 p.m., CHKD Medical Group’s General Booth Pediatrics, 2117 General Booth Blvd., Virginia Beach. Help children manage their anger and gain self-control.
  • Oct. 18 – Infant/Child CPR. Fee: $25. 9 a.m.-noon, CHKD Medical Group’s General Booth Pediatrics, 2117 General Booth Blvd., Virginia Beach. Parents, grandparents and caregivers learn the basics for responding to emergencies.
  • Oct. 23 – Navigating IEP and 504 Plans. Free. 7-8:30 p.m., CHKD Health Center (3rd floor), 733 Volvo Parkway, Chesapeake. Parents gain information about navigating the special education system.
  • Oct. 23 – Nov. 13, Infant Massage. Fee: $40. 6:15-7:30 p.m. CHKD Medical Group’s Pediatric Specialists, 160 Kingsley Lane, Suite 305, Norfolk. Four-session class for parents with infants 2 weeks old to crawling; learn relaxing, soothing techniques to reduce stress, deepen bonding and help baby sleep better.
  • Oct. 25, Newborn Basics. Free. 9 a.m.-noon, CHKD Medical Group’s Newport News Pediatrics, 716 Denbigh Blvd., Newport News. Expectant and new parents learn practical information to relieve their doubts and fears, with emphasis on health and safety issues and reading an infant’s cues.
  • Oct. 27 – December 8 – Healthy You Program. Fee required; tuition assistance available. 6:30-8 p.m., CHKD Health Center (3rd floor), 733 Volvo Parkway, Chesapeake. An educational program for overweight children (8- to 11-year-olds) and their parents. This program includes an individual assessment and a seven-week “Healthy You” lifestyle series.   • Oct. 28 – Surviving Your Adolescents – What’s a Parent To Do? Free. 7-8:30 p.m. The Barry Robinson Conference Center, 433 Kempsville Road, Norfolk. A clinical psychologist provides parents information on managing and letting go of teens.
