January Classes, Programs and Lectures

  • Jan. 7, Positive Discipline. Free. 7-8:30 p.m., CHKD Health Center, 733 Volvo Parkway, Chesapeake. Learn several discipline techniques that work without yelling, arguing or spanking.
  • Jan. 7 – Feb. 18, Healthy You Program: Youth Class (8- to 11-year-olds). 6:30-8 p.m. each Wednesday, CHKD Health Center, 850 Southampton Ave., Norfolk. An educational program for overweight children and their parents, including an individual assessment and a 7-week “Healthy You” lifestyle series. Call 668-7035 for registration and fee information; tuition assistance available.
  • Jan. 10, Safe Sitters. Fee: $35. 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m., CHKD’s Discovery Care Center, 811 Redgate Ave., Norfolk. For 11- to 14-year-olds who want to learn how to become safe and nurturing baby sitters.
  • Jan. 20, When Children Lose Control: Helping Your Child Manage Anger. Free. 7-8:30 p.m., CHKD 5th floor conference room, 601 Children’s Lane, Norfolk. Learn how to help children (birth to 6 years) manage their anger and learn self-control.
  • Jan. 22, Coping with a Strong-willed Child. Free. 7-8:30 p.m., CHKD Health Center, 3rd floor, 733 Volvo Parkway, Chesapeake. Learn how to understand and cope with acting-out behaviors and alternative ways to handle spirited children.
  • Jan. 27, Dealing with Bullying. Free. 7-8:30 p.m. CHKD Medical Group’s Pediatric Specialists, 300 Medical Parkway, Suite 222, Chesapeake. Learn about behaviors that lead to bullying, the emotional effects on children and how parents and teachers can help.
  • Jan. 29 – Mar. 11, Healthy You Program: Teen Class (12- to 18-year-olds). 6:30-8 p.m. each Thursday, CHKD Health Center, 850 Southampton Ave., Norfolk.
