February Classes, Programs and Lectures

  • Feb. 3, The Ten Greatest Gifts I Give My Child. Free. 7-8:30 p.m., Healthy Families Partnership, 100 Old Hampton Lane, Hampton. This presentation offers a fresh approach for parents to build their children’s self-esteem, confidence and decision-making abilities.
  • Feb. 5, Parenting in a Military Family. Free. 7-8:30 p.m., The Barry Robinson Conference Center, 443 Kempsville Road, Norfolk. A workshop for parents that explores effective discipline and includes strategies for helping children cope with a military lifestyle.
  • Feb. 5 – 26, Infant Massage. Fee: $40. 6:15-7:30 p.m. each Thursday, Pediatric Specialists, 160 Kingsley Lane, Suite 305, Norfolk. A four-part class for parents of young children (2-weeks old to crawling) who want to learn techniques that reduce stress, deepen bonding and help baby sleep better.
  • Feb. 10, Keeping Your Cool: Anger and Stress Management for Parents. Free. 7-8:30 p.m., Healthy Families Partnership, 100 Old Hampton Lane, Hampton. Learn how to manage stress by recognizing your responses to anger and its impact on your family’s environment.
  • Feb. 12, Project LINK. Free. 7-8:30 p.m., The Barry Robinson Conference Center, 443 Kempsville Road, Norfolk. The Virginia Beach Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse explores how Project LINK helps parents in recovery rebuild their relationships with their children.
  • Feb. 21, Safe Sitters Class (11- to 14-year-olds). Fee: $35. 9 a.m-3:30 p.m. CHKD’s Discovery Care Center, 811 Redgate Ave., Norfolk. An educational class for teens who want to learn how to become safe and nurturing baby sitters.
  • Feb. 17, KidWise. Free. 7-8:30 p.m., Healthy Families Partnership, 100 Old Hampton Lane, Hampton. An award-winning workshop that offers practical tips for teaching children personal safety skills.
  • Feb. 19, Positive Discipline. Free. 7-8.30 p.m., The Barry Robinson Conference Center, 443 Kempsville Road, Norfolk. Learn several discipline techniques that work without yelling, arguing or spanking.
  • Feb. 23 – Apr. 5, Healthy You Program: Youth Class (8- to 11-year-olds). 6:30-8 p.m., each Monday, CHKD Health Center, 3rd Floor, 733 Volvo Parkway, Chesapeake. An educational program for overweight children and their parents, including an individual assessment and a 7-week “Healthy You” lifestyle series.   • Feb. 24, Adolescence: Navigating the Storm. Free. 7-8:30 p.m., Healthy Families Partnership, 100 Old Hampton Lane, Hampton. An informational presentation to help parents navigate their teen safely through this all-important developmental phase.
  • Feb. 26, Positive Discipline for the Child with a Behavior Disorder. Free. 7-8:30 p.m., The Barry Robinson Conference Center, 443 Kempsville Road, Norfolk. Positive discipline strategies are explored for children with ADHD, conduct disorder, oppositional defiant disorder and other behavior disorders.
