Kohl’s Department Stores Unleashes Clifford the Big Red Dog to Benefit CHKD

HAMPTON ROADS, Va.— Kohl’s Department Stores is reaching out to children’s hospitals in a big – and red – way this spring, offering books and plush toys from the popular children’s series, “Clifford the Big Red Dog,” for a fraction of the typical retail price. Author Norman Bridwell’s best-selling books, including “Clifford the Big Red Dog,” “Clifford the Small Red Puppy,” “Teacher’s Pets” and “The Missing Beach Ball,” as well as plush toys depicting characters Clifford, Cleo, T. Bone and Mac, are now available at Kohl’s stores for a limited time in specially designated displays near the entrance of the stores. Each hard-cover book and each plush toy will be sold for $5 at Kohl’s stores nationally and at www.kohls.com. The books typically retail for $17.95 apiece. Kohl’s will donate 100 percent of the net profits to 57 children’s hospitals across the country, including Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters. In addition to the books and plush toys, Kohl’s is giving away a 3-foot tall Clifford plush toy at each Kohl’s store. One winner at each store will be randomly selected from eligible entries to receive the giant stuffed Clifford plush, with an approximate retail value of $55. Customers can register to win the giant Clifford at either of the two Hampton Roads Kohl’s, near Pembroke Mall in Virginia Beach or off Battlefield Blvd. in Chesapeake. Or register via mail from until March 5. Sweepstakes is open to legal U.S. residents 18 years of age or older and no purchase is necessary to enter or win. “We’re happy to feature these great products featuring Clifford, who has entertained generations of children all around the world over the past 40 years,” said Julie Gardner, senior vice president of marketing for Kohl’s. “Kohl’s Cares for Kidsâ is about helping the young people in our communities. Through the program, Kohl’s supports children’s hospitals as they provide vital services to children and families. We are proud to support our hospital partners, and we applaud their commitment to their communities.” Originally published in 1963, author/illustrator Norman Bridwell’s “Clifford the Big Red Dog” launched a popular book series, now with more than 90 million books in print. Bridwell’s “Clifford” books build on pro-literacy and community-based lessons and feature understated texts, colorful illustrations and tongue-in-cheek humor. The books are the inspiration for the cartoon series featured nationally on PBS. The Clifford merchandise is a part of the Kohl’s Cares for Kidsâ program, which focuses on supporting health and education opportunities for children. The items are the latest in a successful line of merchandise made especially for sale at Kohl’s in support of children’s hospitals. Since its inception in 2000, the Kohl’s Cares for Kidsâ program has made special merchandise available for purchase in support of children’s hospitals every spring, summer, fall and holiday season. The net profits support programs that are tailored to each individual hospital’s needs. Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters is the only facility of its kind in Virginia, serving the medical and surgical needs of children throughout greater Hampton Roads, the Eastern Shore of Virginia and northeastern North Carolina. The not-for-profit hospital was founded in 1961 and provides care to nearly 150,000 children each year as inpatients and outpatients, addressing routine and complex illnesses, injuries and chronic conditions. The CHKD Health System operates primary care pediatric practices, surgical practices, multi-service Health Centers and satellite offices throughout its service region.
