Williamsburg Resident To Chair Fundraising Campaign For CHKD Health Center at Oyster Point

HAMPTON ROADS, Va.—Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters Health System has named Gerald L. “Jerry” Passaro, president of TowneBank on the Peninsula and a Williamsburg resident, to chair its $4.5 million capital campaign for the new CHKD Health Center in the Oyster Point area of Newport News. The two-story, 43,000-square foot facility, which opened in May, provides for the first time a permanent home on the Peninsula for CHKD medical and surgical specialists, a full range of rehabilitation and diagnostic services and a CHKD Medical Group primary care pediatrics practice, making it possible for area children to receive a wide array of CHKD’s outpatient care much closer to home. Passaro is a staunch believer in the value of child-specific care and was an early supporter of CHKD’s efforts to expand services on the Peninsula. And he’s an enthusiastic member of the Health System’s Peninsula Advisory Board. “The Peninsula is growing at such a fast pace,” Passaro said. “We desperately needed the new CHKD Health Center. And the ambulatory surgery center that’s coming this summer is going to make an additional, huge difference to our families. As a parent with first-hand experience with CHKD’s world-class, child-centered care, it just feels right in my heart to do everything I can to help this initiative.” The Center is located on eight acres of CHKD-owned land at 11783 Rock Landing Drive near the Omni Hotel, just off I-64’s J. Clyde Morris Boulevard exit. Currently, the Center houses approximately 35 employees and is expected to handle more than 24,000 visits during the first year. Additionally, construction of an 11,000-square-foot, two-suite outpatient surgery facility is underway and will open by Summer 2005. Then, Peninsula children also will be able to undergo surgery in a number of pediatric specialty areas on an outpatient (same-day) basis. The hospital anticipates performing close to 1,000 surgeries at the ambulatory surgery center during its first full year of operation. Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters is the only facility of its kind in Virginia, serving the medical and surgical needs of children throughout greater Hampton Roads, the Eastern Shore of Virginia and northeastern North Carolina. The not-for-profit hospital was founded in 1961 and provides care to nearly 160,000 children each year as inpatients and outpatients, addressing routine and complex illnesses, injuries and chronic conditions. The CHKD Health System operates primary care pediatric practices, surgical practices, multi-service Health Centers and satellite offices throughout its service region. The organization also includes a child care center, Center for Pediatric Research, health education initiatives and a multitude of avenues through which our very generous community provides philanthropic support.
