Finish Line of "Children's Marathon" June 17 in Norfolk
– Many of the children who participate in the 1-mile Fun Run at the RunWalk for the Kids, Saturday, June 17, at 9:30 a.m. at CHKD, will be completing much more than a mile. They'll be finishing a marathon training program they started anywhere from 4 to 8 weeks earlier.
The Children's Marathon is designed to get all kids up and moving and to help our community combat the national epidemic of childhood obesity. To participate, children should visit the Web site www.runwalkforthe kids.org, register for the 1-mile Fun Run and download a special training log. (Families who do not have computer access can call 669-7098 to find out how to participate.) The log consists of 26 steps, each representing one mile. Each time a child exercises for 30 minutes, it counts as one step or "mile" of their marathon. The goal is to complete 25 "miles" in the weeks leading up to the RunWalk for Kids. The final mile will be the 1-mile Fun Run at the race on June. 17th.
The first 300 children who register, complete their logs and turn them in at the event will receive an official finisher's medal.
The Children's Marathon and the RunWalk for the Kids are projects of the Norfolk City Union of The King's Daughters, founding organization of Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters. All proceeds from the events will go to benefit CHKD.
