Free Workshops for Professionals, Parents
Children and Divorce
HAMPTON ROADS, Va.--Two free workshops exploring the issues of children and divorce will be presented by Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters and Kohl’s Department Stores on June 6 at the CHKD Health and Surgery Center at Oyster Point, 11783 Rock Landing Drive, Newport News.
The professional’s workshop, 1-4 p.m., is entitled “Children and Divorce: Helping Families, Protecting Children.” It will explore how divorce potentially puts children at risk for psychological and behavioral problems at home, in school and later in life and provide a road map to help the suffering divorce can cause children.
The parent’s workshop, 7-9 p.m., is entitled “The Truth about Children and Divorce.” It will explore how parent’s powerful emotions shape the divorce process and how they influence children in the long run. The speaker will explain how parents can manage the feelings of their divorce and deal more effectively with daily tasks – from talking to their children and creating a workable parenting schedule to dealing with legal issues.
Featured presenter is Robert Emery, Ph.D., professor of psychology and director of the Center for Children, Families and the Law at the University of Virginia. He is author of The Truth about Children and Divorce: Dealing with the Emotions So You and Your Children Can Thrive. He is a clinical psychologist, divorce mediator and father of five.
The workshops are free, but seating is limited and advance registration is requested. For more information or to register, call (757) 668-7500 or visit www.chkd.org/classes. The workshops are part of a series of lectures to help parents and professionals build stronger relationships with their children. The series is made possible by a $56,557 grant from Kohl’s through the Kohl’s Care for Kids campaign.
