Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club Family Fun Day Raises $3,700 to Benefit CHKD
HAMPTON ROADS, Va.—Wal-Mart stores and Sam’s Clubs from around the region joined together May 31 to host a Family Fun Day that garnered more than $3,700 to benefit CHKD. It was held at the Sam’s Circle shopping center in Chesapeake.
The highly successful event celebrated the area stores’ “Miracle Month of May” and the corporation’s 20th year as a Children’s Miracle Network sponsor. During the past year, the corporation donated more than $334,400 to CHKD.
There were games and fun activities for the whole family, and the day ended with a singing competition – “A Miracle Idol” – with celebrity judges Chuck, Jenna and Woo-Woo, morning DJs at radio station 94.9 The Point. The first-place winner of the competition was Lisa Williams who works at Wal-Mart 1759 in Gloucester.
Also participating during the day were Chesapeake Mayor Dalton Edge, Ms. Norfolk, Elizabeth Crot, and a CHKD “Miracle Child” Jake Cortez, 5, of Chesapeake and his mother Kimberly, who shared Jake’s incredible story about battling cancer.
Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters is the only facility of its kind in Virginia, serving the medical and surgical needs of children throughout greater Hampton Roads, the Eastern Shore of Virginia and northeastern North Carolina. The not-for-profit hospital was founded in 1961 and last year handled approximately 6,100 inpatient admissions and 200,000 outpatient specialty, surgical and emergency room visits, addressing routine and complex illnesses, injuries and chronic conditions.
