CHKD receives $60,000 grant to bring obesity prevention program to Williamsburg

Grant funded by the Williamsburg Community Health Foundation

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters has received a $60,000 grant to bring its nationally renowned pediatric weight management program, Healthy You, to Williamsburg.

The grant, from the Williamsburg Community Health Foundation, will allow CHKD health experts and dieticians to hold Healthy You sessions starting in March 2008 and continuing through December.

“We are thrilled that we can expand our program to serve children and families in Williamsburg,” said Healthy You manager Barbara Benson. “While childhood obesity has become a national epidemic, it has to be battled by individual communities and families.”

Over the past 20 years, obesity rates for children ages 6-11 years of age have doubled and they’ve tripled for children ages 12-19. Obesity has become one of the most common medical problems confronting children and adolescents today, and its negative health effects that last far into the future.

Healthy You is the region’s only weight management program designed specifically for young people.

The program is available for children in two age groups (8-11 and 12-18 years of age) who have been assessed as being significantly overweight by their health care provider.

Parents and children who participate in Healthy You:
• Learn the fundamentals of good nutrition and portion control
• Kick-start a personal exercise program that is fun and motivating
• Gain support and hope from other children and families with similar concerns

Since it was launched in 2001, CHKD’s Healthy You has helped more than 700 local children with serious weight problems.

Those enrolled meet twice weekly for 10 weeks. The program includes an individual health assessment, comprehensive lifestyle classes and peer support. A partnership with a local YMCA introduces participants to a wide variety of fun fitness classes. A CHKD licensed clinical social worker is available to address the psychosocial needs of children battling obesity through group, individual and family therapy.

There is a fee to attend, but scholarships are available.
