CHKD to Open Sports Medicine Facility in Kempsville

Norfolk, Va. - The sports medicine specialists at Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters will bring new services to the Kempsville area in September.

The CHKD Health Center at 171 Kempsville Road has been a home to CHKD’s pediatric orthopedic surgeons for many years. Beginning September 8, CHKD will also offer primary care sports medicine, for problems such as concussions, as well as sports medicine physical therapy at the same location.

A new gym area for rehabilitation and training will be the centerpiece of the renovation, with state-of-the-art weight, balance and cardiovascular workout equipment, plus lots of kid-friendly extras like interactive gaming to motivate young patients.

CHKD developed the region’s only sports medicine program dedicated exclusively to young athletes in response to the growing trend of sports injuries in children and teens. According to the National Safe Kids Coalition, more than 3.5 million children ages 14 years and under receive medical treatment for sports injuries each year. The most common types of sport-related injuries in children are sprains (mostly ankle), muscle strains, bone or growth plate injuries, repetitive motion injuries and heat illness.

Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters is the only freestanding pediatric hospital in Virginia and serves the medical and surgical needs of children throughout greater Hampton Roads, the Eastern Shore of Virginia and northeastern North Carolina.
