CHKD Urologist Receives First-Ever Subspecialty Certification
HAMPTON ROADS, Va.— Jyoti Upadhyay, M.D., of CHKD Surgical Group’s urology practice, recently was awarded an elite subspecialty certification in pediatric urology by the American Board of Urology (ABU). She is among the first group of physicians in the United States and Canada to receive certification in this newly designated ABU subspecialty.
She took the examination in May along with 176 other urologists who met rigorous screening criteria involving evidence of extensive pediatric urology clinical practice following a mandatory two-year accredited fellowship.
Upadhyay is a nationally recognized expert in the field of pediatric urology and is a pioneer in the development of minimally-invasive techniques in pediatric urology. She attended medical school and completed her urology residency at Wayne State University in Michigan. During her fellowship training in pediatric urology at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, she received the prestigious American Foundation of Urologic Disease Scholarship. Prior to her arrival at CHKD last winter, she was chief and director of pediatric urology at State University Hospital of New York.
Upadhyay's special interests include complex genitourinary reconstructive surgery including augmentation cystoplasty and catheterizable urinary stomas for neurogenic bowel and bladder disease. She also has performed extensive reconstructive surgery for ambiguous genitalia, congenital adrenal hyperplasia and intersex states. Other specialties include minimally invasive laparoscopic kidney procedures, uteroscopy and the use of holmium laser in the treatment of pediatric kidney and ureteral stones. She is also certified to perform daVinci robotic-assisted pyeloplasties for utereral anomalies.
