CHKD Public Programs – May 2009

Hampton Roads, Va.—The following free public programs will be offered by CHKD Health System in May.

  • May 5, Raising Resilient Kids in a Single Parent Home. Free. 7 – 9 p.m. CHKD Health and Surgery Center at Princess Anne, 2021 Concert Drive, Virginia Beach. Raising children as a single parent is hard. Limited time and finances add to the challenge. Learn how to balance home and work and create a supportive and positive environment for your children. Also learn ways to help children deal with separation and divorce. Register online at www.chkd.org/classes.
  • May 12, How Children Manage Anger. Free. 9:30 – 11 a.m. CHKD Health and Surgery Center at Oyster Point, 11783 Rock Landing Drive, Newport News. Learn how to help young children (up to age 6) manage their anger and learn self-control. Register online at www.chkd.org/classes.
  • May 16, Sibshops for Siblings 6 to 10 years old. Free. Portsmouth City Park, Family Picnic, 140 City Park Ave., Portsmouth. A recreational workshop for brothers and sisters of children who have special health and development needs (including, but not limited to, diabetes, cancer, cystic fibrosis, heart, kidney, liver gastrointestinal or lung disease, sickle cell, AIDS, head injuries, autism) to obtain peer support and education.   • May 19, Adolescents: What Are They Thinking? Free. Sixth floor conference room, Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters, 601 Children's Lane, Norfolk. If you have a teen who uses poor judgement and makes decisions that are not rational or well-considered, you are not alone. Learn of the development of teen brains, including new research findings that can help you understand why teenagers' choices and behaviors can baffle adults. Learn how you can use this information to improve communication and decision making with your teen. Register online at www.chkd.org/classes.
  • May 26 - July 14, WWF - Winning Without Fighting. Free. Hampton Healthy Families Partnership, 100 Old Hampton Lane, Hampton. Using the RETHINK method by Research Press, parents will learn to analyze their own responses to anger and how it impacts the family environment. Strategies for implementing positive responses to anger with children of different ages will be discussed. A class for Kindergarten to Middle School children will be provided. This class is not appropriate for families referred through court or social service agencies.
