Kohl’s sponsored public programs in May

HAMPTON ROADS, VA – The following free public programs are sponsored by CHKD and Kohl’s Department Store.

  • May 13, Food, Weight and Body Image -Helping children and teens feel confident and healthy (Parent Workshop). Free. 7 – 9 p.m. Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters, 601 Children's Lane, Norfolk. Are you concerned that your child has unrealistic expectations about her body and weight? Positive body image often takes a hit during the preteen years because of a child's appearance changes quickly and negative cultural messages are very strong. Being criticized or teased about appearance can be particularly hurtful at this age. Preteens and teens often compare their looks with others or with media images of the "right" way to look. Dr. Linda Mintle will discuss the negative messages and pressures young people experience very early that can lead to unhealthy eating and negative body image.   • May 21, Happiest Baby on the Block. Free. 6:30 – 8:30 p.m., CHKD Health & Surgery Center at Greenbrier - 3rd floor, 733 Volvo Parkway, Chesapeake. This two-hour class for expectant and new parents will help Mom and Dad navigate the first months of Baby's life while learning how to soothe even the fussiest infant in minutes and help Baby sleep longer. Parents will learn about the calming reflex, the cuddle cure and the "5 Ss." All participants will receive "The Happiest Baby on the Block" DVD by Dr. Harvey Karp and a soothing sounds CD. These programs are co-presented by CHKD and Kohl’s Department Stores as part of a series of lectures on children’s health and wellness. The series is made possible by a $68,900 grant from Kohl’s through the Kohl’s Cares for Kids campaign.
