Kohl’s sponsored public programs in June

HAMPTON ROADS, VA – The following free public programs are sponsored by CHKD and Kohl’s Department Store.

  • June 04, Character: The Ultimate Survival Tool. Free. 7 – 8:30 p.m., Salem High School, 1993 SunDevil Drive, Virginia Beach. Ethan Zohn, former professional soccer player and 2002 winner of the "Survivor: Africa" reality TV show, will discuss the importance of character, where it comes from, why it matters and how it can influence important decisions in your life. He will relate character building moments in his own life, from his father's death when he was 14 to his experiences on the soccer field and in college, to illustrate how character is built and why it is important to develop, nurture and refine one's character. Parents and young people are invited to join Ethan as he explains how to be a valuable and contributing member of a community and make a difference.   • June 09, Helping Children Cope with Change, Grief and Loss (Parent Workshop). Free. 7 – 9 p.m., CHKD Health and Surgery Center at Princess Anne, 2021 Concert Drive, Virginia Beach. This interactive workshop will help you understand and respond to children experiencing loss from divorce, death, deployment, adoption, foster care or other life-changing circumstance. Children experience life from their own developmental perspective. As adults we can help them successfully navigate the process by recognizing resiliency and promoting healthy coping skills.   • June 17, Parenting a Child with Special Needs. Free. 7 -8:30 p.m. CHKD Health and Surgery Center at Princess Anne, 2021 Concert Drive, Virginia Beach. This six-week class series offers families the support and skills they need to navigate the difficult paths of parenting when a child is diagnosed with a chronic, life-altering or life-threatening health or behavior challenge. Families will learn to create nurturning homes and healthcare routines that create a foundation of cooperation and enhance quality of life for the entire family.   • June 27, Happiest Baby on the Block. Free. 10 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. 6th Floor Conference Room, Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters, 601 Children's Lane, Norfolk. This two-hour class for expectant and new parents will help Mom and Dad navigate the first months of Baby's life while learning how to soothe even the fussiest infant in minutes and help Baby sleep longer. Parents will learn about the calming reflex, the cuddle cure and the "5 Ss." All participants will receive "The Happiest Baby on the Block" DVD by Dr. Harvey Karp and a soothing sounds CD. These programs are co-presented by CHKD and Kohl’s Department Stores as part of a series of lectures on children’s health and wellness. The series is made possible by a $68,900 grant from Kohl’s through the Kohl’s Cares for Kids campaign.
