Register for Anthem LemonAid and Support Kids Helping Kids Fight Cancer

First-time event set for the weekend of July 17-19, 2009

NORFOLK, Va. – May 11, 2009 – Remember the excitement of setting up a neighborhood lemonade stand as a kid? Now you can relive that feeling, experience it with your children, and more importantly—help a worthy cause at the same time.

Children and families will host LemonAid stands to support kids fighting cancer during the first Anthem LemonAid to be held in the Hampton Roads area the weekend of July 17-19, 2009. Families, businesses and community groups are encouraged to register and participate to benefit pediatric cancer treatment at Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters, Hampton Roads’ local Children’s Miracle Network hospital.

To help make your stand a success, each participant will receive a free LemonAid kit that includes lemonade mix, cups, pitcher, signs and more. Cups (12 oz.) of lemonade are sold for $1 each and 100 percent of the proceeds will benefit CHKD’s Childhood Cancer Program.

In addition to hosting a traditional LemonAid stand, participants have the opportunity to raise money using an online LemonAid stand. Online LemonAid stands will be active from registration until July 31, and can be personalized with goal information, pictures and messages.

Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Virginia has teamed up with Children’s Miracle Network to sponsor this grassroots fundraising event to help raise awareness and funds for the fight against pediatric cancer. Anthem LemonAid is in its eighth year in the Richmond market and has raised more than $367,000.

“We’re excited to bring this wonderful program to the Hampton Roads area” said Burke King, president, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Virginia. “A rewarding event like LemonAid gives children a hands-on opportunity to truly make a difference in their community. Seeing the enthusiasm in children’s eyes as they raise money to help other children—one glass of lemonade at a time—is priceless.”

Anthem LemonAid is sponsored by Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield and M&T Bank. LemonAid stand partners include Farm Fresh, Walmart, Wynne Ford and Kangaroo Jac’s. This year’s Wrap-up Celebration will be held at Kangaroo Jac’s at 830 Professional Place West in Chesapeake from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Sunday, July 19. All participants are invited to attend, and anyone who turns in their donation that day will be able to enjoy the fun at Kangaroo Jac’s for only $2 per person.
