CHKD free public programs in March

HAMPTON ROADS, Va.—The following free public programs will be offered by CHKD Health System in March.

March 2, When Children Lose Control: Helping Your Child Manage Anger. Free. 7 – 9:00 p.m. Nansemond Pediatrics, 1005 Commercial Lane, Suite 220, Suffolk. Learn how to help young children manage their anger and learn self control. Register online at www.chkd.org/classes.

March 10, Life with a Strong-willed Child. Free. 9:30 – 11:00 a.m. CHKD Health and Surgery Center at Oyster Point, 11783 Rock Landing Drive, Newport News. Parents and caregivers will learn how to understand acting-out behaviors, how temperament affects behavior and effective ways to handle spirited children. Register online at www.chkd.org/classes.

March 10, Meet and Greet. Free. 5:30 p.m. Pediatric Associates of Williamsburg, 119 Bulifants Boulevard, Williamsburg. Please join us for our complimentary Open House, whether you are a new expectant parent, new to the area, or simply looking for a pediatrician. Plan to attend our Meet and Greet informational gatherings designed for you to meet our physicians and nurse practitioners as well as receive a tour of our facilities. March 13, Sibshops for Siblings 6 to 10 years old. Free. 10 a.m. – noon. CHKD Health Center, 850 Southampton Ave., Norfolk. A recreational workshop for brothers and sisters of children who have special health and development needs (including, but not limited to, diabetes, cancer, cystic fibrosis, heart, kidney, liver gastrointestinal or lung disease, sickle cell, AIDS, head injuries, autism) to obtain peer support and education. Please call Gail Cervarich at (757) 668-7646 or e-mail her at cervargs@chkd.org for information and registration. The Sibshop for siblings ages 6 to 10 has CHANGED LOCATIONS, but we haven’t gone far. We are at the Health Center at the CHKD Medical Center Campus, 850 Southampton Avenue (1/8 mile from CHKD). To get there from downtown, you will take Brambleton to Colley Avenue. Turn LEFT at Colley (away from CHKD). Take the next right onto Southampton Avenue. The Health Center is on the right, just past the Norfolk Health Department. The Health Department is closed on Saturdays so you can park there. Sibshops will be in the lobby of the CHKD Health Center on the first floor.

March 18, Baby Care 101. Free. 7 – 9:00 p.m. Pediatric Associates of Williamsburg, 119 Bulifants Boulevard, Williamsburg. Please join us for our free Baby Care 101 class for expectant and newborn parents who want to learn about providing a safe and secure environment for their infant. Learn about how to bathe and comfort your baby, belly button and diaper care, how to position your baby for sleep and general household and car seat safety tips. March 18, The How, Why and What I Do About Teen Behavior. Free. 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. CHKD Health and Surgery Center at Princess Anne, 2021 Concert Drive, Virginia Beach. If you have a teen who uses poor judgment and makes decisions that are not rational or well-considered, you are not alone. Learn of the development of teen brains, including new research findings that can help you understand why teenagers' choices and behaviors can baffle adults. March 25, Breastfeeding. Free. 6:30 – 7:30. Pediatric Associates of Williamsburg, 119 Bulifants Boulevard, Williamsburg. Please join us for our free breastfeeding class. This is an introductory breastfeeding preparation class is designed to inform the prospective breastfeeding mother about the advantages of and contraindications to breastfeeding. Several topics are discussed including proper positioning; latch on tips, management of engorgement and sore nipples, as well as returning to work and maternal medications while working.
