Kohl’s sponsored free public programs in May

HAMPTON ROADS, Va. — The following free public programs will be offered by CHKD and Kohl’s Department Stores in May.

May 6, ADD/ADHD: Strengthening Your Child's Behavioral & Academic Success (For Parents). Free. 6:30-8:30 p.m. Larkspur Middle School, Auditorium, 4696 Princess Anne Road, Virginia Beach. A Kohl's Family Forum program. Hear from Sandra Rief, author of How to Reach & Teach Children with ADD/ADHD and several other books on helping children with ADHD and learning disabilities succeed in school. Sandra will share practical strategies for dealing with the struggle of homework and building organization, time management, and other important skills. Learn effective behavioral strategies and communication techniques, and how to work collaboratively with the school. This program will provide many tips, tools and resources to help you in supporting your child and managing the challenges of ADHD at home and school. Register online at

May 6, Practical & Powerful Strategies for Managing AD/HD In and Out of the Classroom (For Professionals). Free. 9:30 a.m.–noon. CHKD Brickhouse Auditorium, 601 Children's Lane, Norfolk. A Kohl's Family Forum program. Sandra Rief, well known author and speaker, will share with educators and other professionals a host of practical strategies and best practices for reaching and teaching children with AD/HD. Topics addressed will include proactive strategies for preventing/minimizing behavioral problems in the classroom and other settings, techniques and interventions for dealing with challenging behaviors, instructional strategies for engaging student attention, and some key executive function and academic supports/accommodations. May 12, Great Expectations - The first three years. Free. 9:30 a.m. – noon. CHKD Health and Surgery Center at Oyster Point, 11783 Rock Landing Drive, Newport News. This workshop is designed to help parent's create nurturing environments, increase parenting confidence, and promote optimal physical, intellectual, language, and social/emotional development in their infants and toddlers. Parents will explore how to create consistent routines, set appropriate expectations and limits, and support learning through play and exploration.
