Hyundai Hope on Wheels Donates $40,000 to CHKD to Fight Childhood Cancer
HAMPTON ROADS, Va. – Hyundai Motor America and its Hampton Roads dealers donated $40,000 to CHKD as part of the Hyundai Hope on Wheels program. The 2010 Hope on Wheels Tour is traveling nationwide to donate more than $2.1 million to childhood cancer research institutions.
Hyundai’s donation on Wednesday brings to $195,000 the total amount contributed to CHKD over the last five years.
“Hyundai has been a wonderful partner and its contributions have supported CHKD’s mission to provide world-class cancer care to our patients,” said Jim Dahling, CEO and president of CHKD.
Dr. Eric Lowe, medical director for pediatric oncology at CHKD, was named a 2010 Hyundai Scholar and will use the $40,000 gift for a project on the use of technology to improve communication and compliance with chemotherapy regimens.
As part of the Hope on Wheels ceremony, children with cancer added their colorful handprints to a white Hyundai Santa Fe covered in children’s handprints of cancer patients from all over the country.
“We are inspired every day by the brave children we meet at our Handprint Ceremonies,” said Todd Collins of Checkered Flag Hyundai. “When the kids place their handprints on the car, we are honoring their brave battles against cancer, commemorating their triumphs and sharing their hope for the future with other children and their families across the country.”
This year Hyundai Hope on Wheels marks 12 years of commitment to childhood cancer research efforts. Hyundai and its dealers have donated more than $14 million to children’s hospitals nationwide and collected hundreds of handprints from children fighting childhood cancer.
CHKD is Virginia’s only freestanding children’s hospital and serves the medical and surgical needs of children throughout greater Hampton Roads, the Eastern Shore of Virginia and northeastern North Carolina. The CHKD Health System also operates primary care pediatric practices, surgical practices, multi-service Health Centers and satellite offices throughout the region.
