Dr. C.W. Gowen Jr. named interim chair of EVMS Department of Pediatrics
HAMPTON ROADS, VA -- Dr. Richard V. Homan, provost and dean of Eastern Virginia Medical School, and Jim Dahling, president and CEO of Children’s Hospital of The Kings Daughters, announced today that Dr. C.W. Gowen Jr. has accepted the position of interim chair of the school’s department of pediatrics. Dr. Gowen has a long history of service to EVMS and CHKD, where the school’s department of pediatrics is based. Since 1990, he has been the director of the joint CHKD-EVMS pediatric residency program, which has trained approximately 70 percent of the region’s pediatricians. He is also an associate professor in the school’s department of pediatrics. “We’re grateful that a well-known leader like Dr. Gowen has agreed to lend a hand at this critical time,” says Dr. Homan. As chair of the department of pediatrics, Dr. Gowen will become the interim vice-president of academic affairs at CHKD, where he is also a neonatologist. “Dr. Gowen’s proven track record of effective leadership will be especially valuable during this time of transition,” says Dahling. Dr. Gowen earned his medical degree at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine in Richmond. He completed his pediatric residency at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and his fellowship in neonatology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. A past recipient of the Dean’s Outstanding Faculty Award at EVMS, his national achievements include publications in peer-reviewed journals, authorship of book chapters and the development of clinical and academic guidelines. Dr. Gowen will assume his new duties as chairman immediately.
