Free CHKD parenting classes and seminars in May

HAMPTON ROADS, Va.—The following free public programs will be offered by CHKD in May.

May 1, Nurturing Parenting Series for Parents of Children 6-11: Week 1 - Nurturing Philosophy. Free. 6:30-8 p.m. CHKD Brickhouse Auditorium, 2nd floor, 601 Children's Lane, Norfolk. For parents only. This is NOT a professional training. Learn the importance of raising children in a warm and caring home, where they can thrive and become respectful, caring and cooperative. Understand parenting roles, behavior encouragement techniques, and how to recognize and meet your own needs. This is a six-part series of classes covering: Nurturing Philosophy, Communication, Building Self Worth, Understanding Feelings, Family Morals and Values, Stress and Anger. May 10, Helping Young Children Manage Emotions (Parent program). Free. 7-9 p.m. CHKD Health & Surgery Center at Princess Anne, 2021 Concert Drive, Virginia Beach. Children’s emotional outbursts can be challenging and often leave a parent not knowing what to do. Discover ways to support the development of a child’s ability to regulate their own emotions. Based on Dr. Becky Bailey’s conscious discipline model and newest book Managing Emotional Mayhem, learn how an adult’s response to emotional upset can either foster or inhibit a child’s ability to develop self-regulation. May 10, Managing Emotional Mayhem: Supporting Your Work with Families of Young Children. Free. 10 a.m.-noon. CHKD Health & Surgery Center at Princess Anne, 2021 Concert Drive, Virginia Beach. Professionals working with young children and families will learn how to support the development of emotional regulation in children and how an adult’s response to emotional upset can either foster or inhibit a child’s ability to develop self-regulation, and learn social skills.
