Free CHKD parenting classes and seminars in September

HAMPTON ROADS, Va.—The following free public programs will be offered by CHKD in September.

September 5, Welcome, Baby! At Pediatric Specialists. Free. 6-7 p.m. 885 Kempsville Rd., Suite 200, Norfolk. At this class for new and expectant parents, our pediatrician will discuss immunizations, breastfeeding, bathing, sleep safety and more. September 6, Chesapeake Pediatrics Meet and Greet. Free. 5-6 p.m. CHKD Health Center at Oakbrooke, Suite 302, 500 Discovery Dr., Chesapeake. September 10 - October 15, ACL Injury Prevention for Female Athletes - 6 week program. $100. 7-8 p.m. CHKD Health Center at Kempsville (Mon & Wed), 171 Kempsville Road, Building A/First Floor, Norfolk. Research has shown that the incidence of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries in female athletes can be reduced by as much as 80 percent with proper training. This program consists of strengthening techniques, core stabilization exercises, plyometrics (jump training), stretching, balance and coordination training as well as proper jumping, landing and cutting techniques. Pre- and post-training assessments will be performed on each participant. This class meets twice a week for six weeks. The first six participants to send in payment will be accepted. Parents and caregivers will learn how to understand acting-out behaviors, how temperament affects behavior, and supportive ways of handling spirited children. September 25 - October 16, Nurturing Series for Parents of Children with Special Needs and Health Challenges. Free. 10 a.m.-noon. CHKD Health & Surgery Center at Princess Anne, 2021 Concert Drive, Virginia Beach. This four-week class series (for parents only) offers families the support and skills they need to navigate the path of parenting children with special needs or health challenges. Families will learn how to create nurturing homes, focus on positive discipline, support siblings and establish cooperative care routines.
