CHKD Health System will institute nicotine-free hiring policy
HAMPTON ROADS, Va.— In keeping with its commitment to the health and wellbeing of patients, families, visitors and staff, Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters Health System will join leading healthcare organizations in our community and across the nation by instituting a nicotine-free hiring policy.
Starting in October, job offers from CHKD Health System will be contingent until candidates pass a nicotine screening during their pre-employment physicals. Those who are denied employment due to a positive result may reapply for open positions at CHKDHS after 180 days.
CHKD Health System is adopting the new policy to achieve the following goals:
- To strengthen and build on the initiative started in January 2010, when the organization made all of its workplaces tobacco-free environments.
- To serve as a strong endorsement of the healthy lifestyle choices we advocate for our patients and staff members.
- To further our ongoing commitment to employee wellness, also supported by an on-site wellness clinic for eligible employees, health risk assessments and free mental health counseling.
CHKD’s new policy will apply to volunteers and interns, but not to present employees, although CHKD strongly encourages and supports smoking cessation efforts for its current employees.
