Walmart Kicks Off Effort to Support Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters

Norfolk, VA –  Walmart stores in Hampton Roads and surrounding areas kicked off their annual campaign to raise money for Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters today.  The effort raised $1.1 million in 2012.

Beginning today, Walmart customers will have the opportunity to donate to the hospital when they check out.  Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters is the only freestanding, full-service pediatric hospital in Virginia, treating children from birth to age 21 in southeastern Virginia, the Eastern Shore of Virginia and northeastern North Carolina.

“We are extremely excited to have the opportunity to give back to such a wonderful cause,” said Walmart Market Manager Chris Mehler. “CHKD is used by both the families of Walmart customers and our associates, so helping to make a difference was a natural fit for Walmart,” Mehler said.

In addition to voluntary donations during check-out, Walmart’s fundraising this year will include a series of small grassroots activities organized locally through the individual stores. In 2012, the Walmart store on Main Street in Suffolk raised more charitable donations than any other store in the country.

“What is so special about Walmart’s activities is that it goes way beyond just giving a check. The employees and management pour their hearts into this effort and it makes a huge difference,” said CHKD Senior Vice President Stephanie Calliott.

Walmart’s fundraising efforts help support CHKD’s radiology department. Last year, Walmart’s donations helped the hospital purchase a second MRI machine.

“When I go to the hospital and see the good we are doing to help these children, it only makes me want to work harder and raise even more money,” said Walmart Market Manager Chuck Richards.
