Free CHKD parenting classes and seminars in September

HAMPTON ROADS, Va.—The following free public programs will be offered by CHKD in September.

September 4, Chesapeake Pediatrics Meet and Greet. Free. 5:00-6:00 p.m. Chesapeake Pediatrics- Oakbrooke, 500 Discovery Drive - Suite 302, Chesapeake. For new and expectant parents or families looking for a pediatric practice. There will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions and tour the office with one of our healthcare providers. September 10, Pediatric Associates of Williamsburg - Monthly Open House. Free. 5:30-6:30 p.m. Pediatric Associates of Williamsburg, 119 Bulifants Boulevard, Williamsburg. For new or expectant parents or families looking for a pediatrician. Register online at www.chkd.org/classes.

September 12, Toddlers: What to Expect. Free. 5:00-6:00 p.m. Suffolk Pediatrics, 1009 Hill Pointe Blvd., Suffolk. Parents of toddlers will learn from our pediatric experts, how to provide healthy and safe environments for toddlers. September 12, Positive Discipline. Free. 6:30-8:30 p.m. CHKD Health and Surgery Center at Oyster Point, 1st floor conference room, 11783 Rock Landing Drive, Newport News. Learn discipline techniques that work without yelling, arguing or spanking. Register online at www.chkd.org/classes.

September 14, Happiest Baby on The Block. Free. 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. CHKD Health and Surgery Center at Princess Anne, 1st floor conference room, 2021 Concert Drive, Virginia Beach. This FREE two-hour class for expectant and new parents will help mom and dad navigate the first 2 -3 months of baby's life while learning how to soothe even the fussiest infant in minutes and help babies sleep longer. Parents will learn about the calming reflex, the cuddle cure and the "5 Ss." All participants will receive "The Happiest Baby on the Block" DVD by Dr. Harvey Karp and a soothing sounds CD. September 16, Mindful Monday Series for Parents and Professionals. Free. 10:00 a.m.-11:30 a.m. CHKD Health and Surgery Center at Princess Anne, 1st floor conference room, 2021 Concert Drive, Virginia Beach. Learn a new concept and skill each session to reduce stress and guide you in raising joyful and resilient children. Focus on awareness, regulation and deliberate action as tools to enhance relationships and build positive connection with children. Understand how mindfulness can support positive growth and create cooperative, competent and caring individuals. Participants are encouraged to attend all sessions: September 16, 30, October 7, 21, November 4, 18. Certificates will be given for attendance. Class for expectant and newborn parents who want to learn about providing a safe and secure environment for their infants. Learn about how to bathe and comfort your baby, about belly button and diaper care, how to position your baby for sleep and general household and car seat safety tips. September 26, Breastfeeding Advice, Pediatric Associates of Williamsburg. Free. 5:30-6:30 p.m. Pediatric Associates of Williamsburg, 119 Bulifants Boulevard, Williamsburg. Please join us for this free introductory class designed to help expectant mothers get off to a good start breastfeeding. September 26, The Effects of Stress and Violence on Early Brain Development and Learning (For Parents). Free. 6:30-8:00 p.m. Indian River Library, 2320 Old Greenbrier Road, Chesapeake. Join Sarah Bishop, MSW, from the United Way of South Hampton Roads, for a dynamic and high-energy workshop addressing early brain development (birth to age 5). Learn about the neurological processes related to children’s learning and how these processes are impacted by stress and violence. The program will reinforce the importance of nurturing adult/child interactions that can lead to positive behavior changes in children.
