Magazine subscription scam falsely claims to raise money for CHKD

Both WAVY-TV 10 and The Virginian-Pilot published warnings about a scam in which people go door to door peddling magazine subscriptions and falsely claim to be raising money for CHKD. As the news outlets report, CHKD never engages in door-to-door fund raising of any type.

CHKD research on reducing vaccination pain featured on NPR's Morning Edition

NPR's Morning Edition featured CHKD pediatrician John Harrington talking about his research using a popular parenting technique known as the 5S's (swaddling, side position, swinging, shushing and sucking) to reduce the pain of infants during routine immunization.

Child abuse dog relieves stress of child victims

The Virginian-Pilot's Elizabeth Simpson wrote about the use of dogs in medicine and focused on Pecos, CHKD's Child Abuse Program dog, who helps relieve the stress of child abuse victims during interviews.

Volunteering "for the kids" for 65 years

WVEC Channel 13's Lucy Bustamante featured 79-year-old Barbara Henry as part of volunteer week, noting that she has been volunteering "for the kids" since 1947, when she was just 14 and the precursor to CHKD was a clinic on Yarmouth Street operated by The King's Daughters.

5S treatment takes the sting out of shots

A research team headed by CHKD pediatrician John Harrington found that the 5S parenting techniques, which were developed by Dr. Harvey Karp to calm crying babies, reduced infants' pain during immunizations. The study was published in the journal Pediatrics and received coverage from more than 50 national and international media outlets including CNN, The New York TimesMSNBC and the London Daily Mail, as well as locally in The Virginian-Pilot, Daily Press and WVEC-TV 13.
