A research team headed by CHKD pediatrician John Harrington found that the 5S parenting techniques, which were developed by Dr. Harvey Karp to calm crying babies, reduced infants' pain during immunizations. The study was published in the journal Pediatrics and received coverage from more than 50 national and international media outlets including CNN, The New York Times, MSNBC and the London Daily Mail, as well as locally in The Virginian-Pilot, Daily Press and WVEC-TV 13.
