After last year's wimpy flu appearance, this season's annual visitor returned with an early vengeance. Doctors and health care providers are battling a variety of germs and viruses this week resulting from a combination of factors: an early start to the flu season; the annual rite of travel in cars, trains and planes for family holiday gatherings; and funneling the population back into work and school places. The Virginian-Pilot's Elizabeth Simpson takes a look at how the flu is affecting the region.
