The focus on food and eating during the holidays can be especially difficult for families of children with diabetes. With a little planning, your child doesn't have to miss out on sweet holiday traditions.

Whether newly diagnosed or living with diabetes for some time, here are some helpful reminders for managing your child’s diabetes during the holidays.

  • Adjust the timing of blood glucose medications to coincide with meal schedules.
  • Check blood glucose levels regularly.
  • Watch portion sizes.
  • Keep carbohydrates and starchy foods to a minimum.
  • Don’t skip meals. If you’re planning a late lunch, don’t skip breakfast. Small meals throughout the day will keep your child from feeling ravenous once they reach the table.
  • Stay active. Exercise after a meal helps naturally lower blood sugar.
  • If you're visiting family and friends, volunteer to bring your child's favorite low-sugar dessert.
  • There’s an app for that. Consider downloading an app that can help track blood sugar, exercise and food intake. It can be a handy tool for controlling your diabetes.
  • If you plan on traveling out of town for the holidays, it may be a good idea to have a checkup with your doctor and get a new prescription for insulin or any other medication your child takes. This way, if your medications are lost or damaged, you have a prescription for a replacement.
