Sports Medicine Update at CHKD Slated for June 14

Start your summer off the right way by attending CHKD’s Sports Medicine Update for Primary Care on June 14 at Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters. 

This conference, which offers a maximum of 7 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits, will review approaches to evaluating, diagnosing and managing injuries in the pediatric and adolescent athlete.

After attending this conference, healthcare professionals who are caring for young athletes will be able to discuss the most current information as well as apply hands-on techniques.

The educational formats for this update include lectures, hands-on workshops, case-based presentations, interactive discussions, and lunch with the experts.

This year’s visiting faculty for the event includes professor Avery D. Faigenbaum,who will speak about the pediatric inactivity triad as well as resistance training; attorney Kathleen McCauley who will discuss social media, sports medicine and the law; and yoga instructor Lisa Vaughan-Meer, who will instruct on the art of finding strength in stillness.

CHKD/EVMS faculty this year include sports medicine specialist Dr. Joel Brenner, licensed clinical social worker Alexandra Laramee, Tyler Miller from sports medicine physical therapy, ENT specialist Dr. John Sinacori, sports medicine physical therapist Sara Stites, and sleep medicine specialist Dr. Michael Strunc.

About Herbert Bevan, MD

Prior to joining the physician liaison staff, Bevan was a practicing hematologist and oncologist at CHKD for 28 years and served a two-year term as president of the CHKD professional staff in 2014-15. Dr. Bevan received "Top Doc" designation from Coastal Virginia Magazine in 2016 in his final year with CHKD's Cancer and Blood Disorders Center. A Kansas native and University of Kansas graduate, Dr. Bevan earned his medical degree from Washington University and completed his residency and fellowships at San Diego Naval Hospital. He joined CHKD after a nine-year stint in the U.S. Navy and in his final two years in the military was stationed at Portsmouth Naval Hospital. Dr. Bevan is a founding member of Children's Specialty Group.
