CHKD's therapy services department provides a wide range of opportunity for physical, occupational and speech language pathologists. There are multi-disciplinary opportunities for staff with patients ranging in age from newborn to 21 in an acute care hospital, acute rehabilitation setting, as well as in seven outpatient sites.
Our outpatient sites are conveniently located in Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Suffolk, Newport News and Williamsburg.
CHKD’s therapy department allows the opportunity for full- or part-time employment, per-diem hours and flexible schedules. A comprehensive mentorship program has been designed to encourage and facilitate learning for new therapists. New graduates are partnered with a clinical trainer who will assist them in mastering skills and competencies. Experienced therapists are also paired with a preceptor to facilitate clinical advancement.
The desire to increase the quality of life of children treated at CHKD facilitates continued growth and development of the therapy services department. We offer a wide range of specialty clinics, language and social skill group programs and specialty therapeutic intervention.
Our department provides the necessary tools to ensure therapists apply the most current therapeutic treatment strategies using the most up-to-date equipment. Patient outcomes are maximized by programs offered such as the Interactive Metronome, Therapeutic Listening, neuromuscular electrical stimulation to treat dysphagia, PROMPT Therapy, Auditory Verbal Therapy, Wilson Reading System and the Sensory Integration and Praxis Test.
Physical therapists are able to utilize specialty devices such as the Lite Gait partial weight bearing treadmill system at all CHKD locations.
Offered by both occupational and physical therapists, aquatic therapy services are provided in outpatient clinics on the Southside and the Peninsula. A state of the art HydroWorx pool is available for skilled aquatic therapeutic intervention.
The CHKD therapy services department offers physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy acute care to patients during their acute medical stay, as well as on the rehabilitation unit.
Our adaptive seating clinic offers a wide range of opportunity for the community and therapists employed at CHKD. Children are evaluated and fitted for specialty wheelchairs, seating systems and other durable medical equipment.
Assistive technology is at its best at CHKD. A multi-disciplinary team is available to assess the needs of children in order to provide the best communication device possible. CHKD’s clinic is fully equipped with the latest technological advances in the field of augmentative communication.
Fully equipped clinics afford specialty trained physical and occupational therapists the opportunity to create serial casts, custom upper-extremity and lower-extremity splints and orthotics.
Along with the clinics mentioned above we also participate in others. Our craniofacial clinic has a specialized speech therapist working as an integral part of the team. In addition we participate in Velopharyngeal Insufficiency (VPI) Clinic which allows speech therapists to assess the severity of VPI in conjunction with ENT’s.
CHKD encourages staff continuing education by allocating funds and allowing for paid professional days. CHKD co-sponsors a variety of continuing education events which allows for staff to attend events at little to no financial cost to them, as well as limited travel.
