Classes & Lectures

CHKD offers classes for kids, teens, parents and grandparents. We offer classes on many subjects and most are free of charge, but registration is required because space is limited.

You may not be able to register for all classes online, please call (757) 668-7500 or (800) 395-2453 to register or to get more information about a class.

ACL Injury Prevention Program - 6 week program
Research has shown that the incidence of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries in female athletes can be reduced by as much as 72-80% with proper training. This ACL injury prevention program for female athletes consist of strengthening techniques, core stabilization exercises, plyometrics (jump training), stretching, balance and coordination training. The class will also focus on proper jumping, landing and cutting techniques. Pre and post-training assessments will be performed on each participant. This class meets twice a week for 6 weeks. Breastfeeding Advice
Please join us for this free introductory class designed to inform the prospective breastfeeding mother about the advantages of breastfeeding. Several topics are discussed including proper positioning; latch on tips, management of engorgement and sore nipples, as well as returning to work and maternal medications. Breastfeeding Consultation and Support at Courthouse Pediatrics
Expectant and nursing moms can meet with a certified lactation specialist for guidance about breastfeeding. This includes proper positioning and latching on, feeding frequency and amounts, baby weight gain, allergies, breast problems, and other concerns. No registration required. Coastal Pediatrics Prenatal Breastfeeding Class
Please join us for this free introductory class designed to inform the prospective breastfeeding mother about how to get breastfeeding off to a good start. This interactive workshop will teach parents how to create family rules based on their own values. Family rules provide a foundation for discipline, and teach children responsibility, decision making, and self control. Happiest Baby on the Block
This two-hour class for expectant and new parents will help Mom and Dad navigate the first months of Baby's life while learning how to soothe even the fussiest infant in minutes and help Baby sleep longer. Parents will learn about the calming reflex, the cuddle cure and the "5 Ss." All participants will receive "The Happiest Baby on the Block" DVD by Dr. Harvey Karp and a soothing sounds CD. Helping Children and Teens Cope with Anxiety (Parents Program)
Anxiety can prevent children from being successful in and out of school. Learn the difference between normal and problem anxiety, and how to recognize the faces of anxiety, including worry, separation anxiety, school refusal, perfectionism, test anxiety, social anxiety, panic, obsessions and rituals. Infant Massage
This is a newborn infant massage class for expecting and new parents. Parents will learn simple infant massage techniques designed for infants from birth to 6 months. Parent View, Child View: Putting Autism in Perspective (Professional Program)
Learn from Ellen Notbohm how to gain a parent's perspective on the multi-disciplinary network of therapeutic, educational and social services parents must identify, locate and manage on behalf of their child with autism; and learn how clinicians and educators can provide perspective and emotional support to parents of children with autism. In addition, Ellen will identify common environmental, language and social-emotional challenges/characteristics of autism in children and how adults can modify their own behavior and environment to better communicate with and teach children with autism. Putting Autism in Perspective (Parent Program)
Teaching, raising or relating to a child with autism requires us to take the perspective of a person whose thinking architecture, sensory perceptions and communication pathways may be very different from ours. Award-winning author Ellen Notbohm, mother of two sons on the spectrum, will offer parents guideposts for facing their child’s autism with a healthy and productive outlook, and share a child’s-eye look at the primary characteristics of autism embodied in her book, Ten Things Every Child with Autism Wishes You Knew.
