La adolescencia es un período de transición entre la niñez y la edad adulta. Es un período de desarrollo estresante lleno de grandes cambios en la madurez física y la sexualidad, los procesos cognitivos (las formas de pensar y el contenido del pensamiento), las emociones y las relaciones con otras personas.

La atención de las necesidades de salud de este grupo etáreo requiere no sólo la atención de los problemas de la salud identificados, sino la consideración de las complejas interacciones de los cambios en sus necesidades de salud durante este desarrollo, la efectividad del tratamiento, la educación y la promoción de la salud.

A medida que los adolescentes comienzan a asumir la responsabilidad de su propia salud, la educación y promoción del cuidado preventivo de la salud cobran una gran importancia.
