Falls

Falls hurt more children ages 14 and under than any other accidental injury.

Children most often fall from:

  • Baby walkers

  • Furniture

  • Playground equipment

  • Shopping carts

  • Stairs

  • Windows

How serious an injury is from a fall depends on the height of the fall and the landing surface. Most serious or fatal falls involve head injuries.

You can help prevent certain types of falls at home by taking proper safety steps. These include adding window guards and moving furniture away from windows. You should also make sure the surface underneath playground equipment is soft enough. It should be a loose-fill surface or a special surface made for playgrounds.
