Program Highlights

  • Family Centered Rounds
  • Strong affiliation with Eastern Virginia Medical School
  • Teaching & Mentoring Residents

Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) and the Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters (CHKD), a 212-bed, free-standing, full-service pediatric hospital located in southeast Virginia, offers a one-year hospitalist medicine fellowship position to begin in July of each year.

This is part of an ambitious program whose goal is to cultivate pediatric hospitalist academic leaders by providing exposures beyond what is expected in residency, with an emphasis on holistic inpatient clinical excellence, administrative acumen, research skill sets, and medical education. We stress providing high-quality, safe clinical care, as well as encouraging multidisciplinary teamwork and outcomes management.

The fellowship position is open to physicians who have successfully completed a pediatric residency program, based in the U.S.; unfortunately, we are not supporting J1 visas at this time. The fellowship director reviews each application for merit and selects a pool of candidates that are invited to interview with CHKD Hospitalst Medicine faculty, typically late January - February.

Our fellow will spend ~20 weeks on the Ward Service, over half of which is supervised (12-14 weekends); other core clinical activities are fulfilled through any combination of the following totaling ~8 weeks (in 2 or 4 week rotations): Observation Unit; Sedation/Anesthesia; Pain; PICU; Transport; Chronic/Institutional Care (St. Mary's, Lake Taylor).

To develop autonomy in the hospitalist role, our fellows select an elective, or pairing of electives, totaling ~4 weeks; approved through the fellowship director, these include (but are not limited to): Toxicology; Child Protection; Respiratory Care; Rehab; Pharmacy; Lab; Pathology; Sub-specialty; Admin; PICU / NICU; ED.

Non-clinical, Scholarly and Administrative Component
Great opportunities for leadership and scholarship development are available through any combination of the following, totaling ~15 weeks: Research Project through IRB; Poster Presentation (PHM and/or AAP, 2012); One Grant Application; Active Involvement in Resident / Medical Student Education; One QI / Safety Project.

Fellows learn the principles of administration in weekly administrative meetings and by involvement in the day-to-day operations of the Hospitalist Division. Fellows also sit on various hospital committees broadening their administrative exposure.

A 1 week allotment is given to persue CME credit, separate from the 4 week allocated vacation time. This is generally used for the Pediatric Hospitalist Medicine Conference, typically held in July of each year.
