Nursing at CHKD

Join Me at CHKD

Luz Jusayan, RN, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

"There are so many things to love about my job," said Luz Jusayan, an RN in the NICU. "I love smiles from the babies best. I love getting letters from parents of former patients who tell me how great their baby is doing and thank me for being part of their lives. And I really like being a mentor to new nurses."

Jusayan began her career at the University of St. Thomas in her native Philippines. At the age of 21, she traveled to the United States as part of an exchange program at Christ Hospital in New Jersey, where she obtained medical and surgical experience before joining that hospital’s new coronary care unit. When the military brought Jusayan and her husband to Hampton Roads, she worked at several hospitals, including the Veterans Administration in Hampton, where she injured her shoulder when caring for a large patient. After prolonged therapy, she switched her focus from big patients to the tiniest of patients and came to CHKD. That was 25 years ago.

"It’s so gratifying to work at a place that is so loved and respected by the community. I know I’m in a good place."
