Changes in the appearance and size of breasts may happen to both young girls and boys due to many causes, including hormone changes. Breast conditions, like gynecomastia and macromastia, can hurt a teen's self-esteem, affect school performance and change behavior.

Gynecomastia occurs when boys develop breasts. It isn't caused by excess fat tissue, but by the growth of too much breast tissue. Hormone changes when boys are under two years old as well as around puberty can both cause gynecomastia. In most cases, gynecomastia will go away as boys grow. However, uneven breast growth or excessive breast growth can cause boys to feel badly about their bodies and themselves.

Macromastia (very large breasts) can be a problem for teen girls. Macromastia can cause many problems, including low self-esteem, back and neck pain, poor posture and recurring rashes under the breasts. Teen girls with very large breasts may receive unwelcome attention that makes them uncomfortable. They may also have trouble finding clothes that fit and find it difficult to participate in sports or activities.

Both gynecomastia and macromastia can be treated with breast reduction surgeries. At CHKD, our specially trained pediatric plastic surgeons and their experienced staff work to help teens and children feel better about their bodies. Plastic surgery for gynecomastia and macromastia can improve appearance and relieve symptoms of very large breasts. CHKD psychologists and psychiatrists can also work with teens and families to improve confidence and self-esteem.
