Helm has been working with children and adolescents in both a professional and para-professional role since 2003. His clinical experience comes from a broad range of settings, including outpatient, residential, partial hospitalization (day treatment), substance abuse, experiential (low/high ropes course), and wilderness programs.

He is certified as a substance abuse counselor and is a nationally certified counselor.

Helm takes a bio-psycho-social, skill-based approach to treatment and believes that every child, given the right set of skills, encouragement, and perspectives, can succeed.  Helm also incorporates a systems-based approach to ensure sustained gains.

Helm completed his clinical residency working at a co-occurring adolescent substance abuse intensive outpatient program and day treatment program in Virginia Beach and then in a residential setting in Norfolk as a licensed clinician.

Helm is a veteran, having served honorably in the U.S. Army, and has a passion working with military families and the unique challenges that come with the military lifestyle.

In his off time, he enjoys outings with his family, surfing, bodyboarding, and hiking.
