At CHKD, we want to get your young athlete back into action healthy and ready to perform to their maximum abilities, whether they swim, run, kick, jump or throw.

Swimming Injuries and Swim Stroke Analysis

Call (757) 668-7529 (PLAY) for an appointment with Dr. David Smith, who heads our swimming program.

If your child has been injured or is experiencing pain while swimming, CHKD's swim specialists will work to determine the exact nature of the injury and together create a treatment plan that works best for you and your child.

CHKD's Sports Medicine Program also offers a Swim Stroke Analysis to help identify any technique errors that may be contributing to pain or poor performance. Using advanced in-pool analysis, CHKD uses multi-angle videos so that your child can better understand any technique errors. This will help to reduce injuries and allow your child to reach his or her swimming potential.

You will get a copy of the video to share with your child's coach so they can work together on improving techniques and maximizing performance.

You do not need a referral to schedule an appointment. The cost for the Swim Stroke Analysis is $150 and is typically not covered by insurance. Please call (757) 668-2390 for more information or to schedule an appointment.

Running Injuries and Video Running Analysis

Call (757) 668-PLAY (7529) for an appointment with Dr. Joel Brenner, who heads our running program.

Children's running injuries are different from those experienced by adults. That is why it is important to have your child evaluated by pediatric sports medicine physicians with the expertise to properly diagnose and treat injuries in young runners.

If your child aspires to be or is a competitive runner, CHKD's Sports Medicine Program offers a Video Running Analysis to help identify even the smallest technique errors that may be contributing to pain or poor performance.

A video of his or her running technique will be provided along with our analysis of technique errors and guidance on how to make beneficial adaptations to achieve a better running form.

Our physical therapists can even help with running shoe prescriptions or programs for transitioning to a barefoot shoe or mid-foot strike pattern.

You do not need a referral to schedule an appointment. The cost for the Video Running Analysis is $100 and is typically not covered by insurance. Please call (757) 668-2727 (Virginia Beach office) or (757) 668-2390 (Chesapeake office) for more information or to schedule an appointment.

Baseball Injuries and Pitching Analysis

For an appointment with our sports medicine physicians, call (757) 668-7529 (PLAY).

Serious pitching injuries in young players are skyrocketing. Kids are pitching more than one game a day, throwing curve balls before their bodies are fully developed and even pitching for more than one team during the same season. These reasons and more are contributing to young players experiencing injuries that may force them from the game for weeks, months and sometimes for good.

At CHKD, we recognize that it's sometimes difficult to balance the desire to give your child as many opportunities as possible while not risking the possibility of overuse injuries.

For expert help, turn to the pediatric sports medicine specialists at CHKD who will evaluate the injury and create a treatment plan that will help your child return as quickly as possible to the game.

If the injury was sustained because of improper pitching techniques, we also provide a Video Pitching Analysis that will break down a pitching technique from multiple angles at 300 frames per second.

Our physical therapists will review the videos with you and your child, note errors in mechanics and recommend exercises or drills to help reduce errors. Pitchers will also be given a video of their technique and a printout of our analysis to review with their coaches.

The cost for the video pitching analysis is $150. No referral is needed for this appointment and insurance typically will not cover the cost. Please call Chris Anninos at (757) 668-6644 for more information or to schedule an appointment.

Strong Girls: ACL Injury Prevention Program for Female Athletes

According to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, female athletes who participate in jumping and pivoting sports are two to 10 times more likely to sustain a knee ligament injury, such as the ACL, than male athletes participating in the same sports.

Female ACL injuries are primarily non-contact, unexpected injuries, usually occurring upon landing from a normal jump or while making a routine cut. The ligament can tear if an athlete stops, turns or lands from a jump in an awkward position or with poor balance and control.

Research has shown that with proper training, the incidence of ACL injuries in female athletes can be lowered by as much as 80 percent.

CHKD’s Strong Girls program helps prevent ACL injuries with strengthening techniques, core stabilization exercises, jump training, stretching, balance and coordination training. Classes and clinics led by physical therapists, exercise specialists and athletic trainers focus on proper jumping, landing and cutting techniques.

This program offers informational clinics and comprehensive six-week training programs. If you are a coach or trainer, CHKD offers the Strong Girls programs for teams. We can have our professionals come to your school or training facility. For more information, please call Kira Davies at (757) 668-6637.

Return to Sports Evaluation

A question we hear often at our Sports Medicine Program: "Is my child ready to return to competition?"

It's an important question and one we take very seriously. If young athletes returns too soon, they are susceptible to re-injury or even a new injury.

Our physical therapists use various functional assessment tools to determine whether an athlete is ready to return to sports. These tests will give you and your child peace of mind.

For this service to be covered by insurance, a physician's prescription is required. We offer this service at all sports medicine physical therapy locations. Call (757) 668-PLAY (7529) for an appointment.

Dance Medicine and Rehabilitation

For an appointment with Dr. Joel Brenner or Dr. Allison Crepeau, please call 668-7529 (PLAY). For questions about our program or to request an on-site studio visit, please call us at (757) 668-2727.

Young dancers are often plagued by injuries because of the frequent, intense and repetitive nature of their sport. Unfortunately, many young dancers have been conditioned to ignore early symptoms of injuries and to dance through the pain. This mindset can often worsen injuries that could have been treated easily at the onset. CHKD's Dance Medicine Program will assess dancers, and when necessary, provide treatment to prevent serious injuries.

A dance physical therapist is available to visit dance studios on a weekly or bi-monthly basis to determine which injuries need to be evaluated and treated.

If a serious injury occurs, our comprehensive team can handle everything from the initial assessment and diagnostic testing to surgery and rehabilitation. Our dance medicine team includes Dr. Joel Brenner and Dr. Allison Crepeau, who have worked with dancers at all career levels and a team of physical therapists with dance and pilates experience.

The dance medicine team are also the official medical providers for several dance institutions, including Governors School for the Arts,Todd Rosenlieb Dance and the Virginia Ballet.
