The critical care specialists at Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters provide comprehensive, coordinated critical care in an intensive care setting. A full range of pediatric medical and surgical subspecialists is available to assist the pediatric intensivists with the care of the critically ill child.

What types of services are offered?

CHKD provides a multi-disciplinary Pediatric Intensive Care Unit with 24-hour medical coverage.

A highly skilled pediatric transport team is available 24 hours a day to transport critically ill children to CHKD in specially equipped mobile intensive care units. If necessary, the Nightingale air ambulance is dispatched for emergency situations.

Does your staff have special training?

The critical care physicians are all board certified in pediatrics and pediatric critical care. A full range of other pediatric medical and surgical specialists, pharmacists, lab technicians, radiologists, therapists and dietitians are available 24 hours a day for consultation and patient support.

How are patients referred and/or transferred to the PICU?

Emergency referrals and transport can be arranged by physicians with the CHKD Pediatric Intensive Care Unit by calling Doctors Direct, (757) 668-9999 or 1-800-207-2022. Other consultations are available by calling (757) 668-7537 or (757) 668-7315.
