Critical Care Medicine

The Division of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine provides comprehensive and state-of-the-art coordinated care for all critically ill children admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters.

The PICU is an 18-bed medical/surgical ICU staffed by board-certified pediatric intensivists providing 24-hour medical coverage. Admissions to the PICU comprise approximately 50% medical and 50% surgical admission, averaging 800 admissions per year. The patients range in age from newborn to 21 years of age. Admission to the Pediatric ICU is based on specific criteria including patients requiring maximum observation, support of vital functions, and therapy of reversible life threatening conditions.

The Division of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine provides consultation services including the placement of central venous lines and sedation/analgesia for children with burns and other injuries that require specialized therapeutic intervention.

A highly skilled pediatric transport team is available 24 hours a day to transport critically ill pediatric patients to CHKD in specially equipped mobile intensive care transport units. If necessary, the Nightingale air ambulance is dispatched for emergency situations.

Emergency referrals to the CHKD Pediatric Intensive Care Unit can be obtained by calling Doctors' Direct at (757) 668-9999 of (800) 207-2022.
