Behavioral pediatrics at CHKD provides consultation directed at diagnostic clarification and treatment recommendation, especially psychopharmacology, for children suffering from the effects of mental illness or behavioral disturbance.
In a working partnership with parents and child, we obtain a history of behavior, emotion and function with attention to genetic, medical, developmental, educational, social and family factors.
Our goal is to assist children and families through collaboration with their primary care physicians in the evaluation and treatment of children suffering from mental illness, at a time
when there is a dramatic shortage in the availability of child psychiatric services in most communities. Therefore, instead of seeing children for ongoing care, we provide outpatient consultation, consisting of several visits, to diagnose and make treatment recommendations.
Depending on the situation, we may begin or change medication management, then return the child to the referring practitioner. We will help parents locate appropriate care if needed. We also offer telephone consultation to the child's primary care provider.

Does your staff have special training?
Our psychiatrist is board certified in child and adolescent psychiatry. He is licensed by the Virginia Board of Medicine.
How often will my child see the child psychiatrist?
Instead of seeing children on an ongoing basis, we provide outpatient consultation, consisting of several visits, to diagnose and make treatment recommendations.
Where do you see patients?
We see patients at Children’s Hospital’s main campus in Norfolk. Appointment days and hours generally are 8:30 a.m.
to 4:30 p.m.
Do I need a referral to make an appointment?
We do require referral by your child’s primary care physician.
If you have an HMO, you must:
- Get a referral from your child's primary care physician before you call to make an appointment.
- Make sure that your referral has not expired. Many are good for only 30 days, so check yours before you come to your appointment. If your referral has expired, call your primary care physician and explain your situation. In most cases, your primary care physician will provide a new or extended referral.
- Bring the referral with you to the appointment. If you do not have a referral, or if the referral you have is expired, your HMO will not pay for your appointment.
If you have fee-for-service insurance or a PPO, you do not need a physician's referral to make an appointment.
