The 2019 summer program is no longer accepting applications.

Junior Volunteer Opportunities

Each year, teenagers who turn 15 before June 1 and are still in high school can apply to participate in our Summer Junior Volunteer Program. Returning junior volunteers receive their application information in February, and forms for new applicants are available annually on March 1st.

The program is divided into multiple sessions, each lasting 2-3 weeks. Volunteers should request a session that does not conflict with other summer plans such as camps and vacations. Volunteers report to their volunteer assignment on weekdays, Monday - Thursday only (during each summer) and can choose a morning shift (9 a.m. – 12 p.m.), afternoon shift (1 – 4 p.m.) or full day of volunteering. Please note: While we are able to offer some roles with patient contact, the majority of our volunteer opportunities are strictly office-based.

Assignments are available at our main hospital campus in downtown Norfolk, as well as many satellite centers including Virginia Beach, Newport News, Chesapeake, and Suffolk. The program fills on a first come, first served basis and service areas include:

  • Patient Interactions (in playroom and at bedside)
  • Staff support in various clinics and offices
  • Gift Shop
  • Surgical Services

Junior volunteers are given the opportunity to participate in an annual career fair featuring hospital employees from a variety of departments.

Sessions

  • Session 1: June 17 – July 3
  • Session 2: July 8 – July 25
  • Session 3: July 29 – August 8

Junior Volunteer Orientation Information and Quiz

Volunteers accepted into the program will receive an email on May 1 with instructions for the volunteer orientation and quiz. The deadline for the quiz submission will be on or before May 31. Based upon your assignment, you will be required to complete either one or two orientations.

Child Life Orientation Information and Quiz

If you are assigned to the child life department at your interview, you will also need to review the child life orientation information. Please note that only child life volunteers are required to complete both orientation quizzes.

You will receive an email with the orientation information, and the quiz must be completed two weeks prior to your session start date. After reviewing the material, use the link provided in your orientation email from Volunteer Services to access the quiz. At the completion of your quiz, click the submit button to receive your score and certificate of completion. You do not need to forward a copy of the certificate to Volunteer Services.
