We are no longer accepting applications for the 2017 summer program.

Junior Volunteer Opportunities

Each year, teenagers who turn 15 prior to January 1 and are still in high school can apply to participate in our Summer Junior Volunteer Program. Forms for new applicants are available annually on March 1st. Returning junior volunteers receive their application information in February.

The program is divided into multiple sessions, each lasting 2-3 weeks. Volunteers should request a session that does not conflict with other summer plans such as camps and vacations. Volunteers report to their volunteer assignment on weekdays, Monday - Thursday only (during each summer) and can choose a morning shift (9 a.m.-12 p.m.), afternoon shift (1-4) or full day of volunteering.

Assignments are available at our main hospital campus in downtown Norfolk, as well as many satellite centers including Virginia Beach, Newport News, Chesapeake, and Suffolk. The program fills on a first come basis and service areas include:

  • Patient Interactions (in playroom and at bedside)
  • Staff support in various clinics and offices
  • Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
  • Gift Shop
  • Surgical Services

Junior volunteers are given the opportunity to participate annually in a career fair featuring hospital employees from a variety of departments. In addition, limited CPR training is offered each summer.

Junior Volunteer Orientation Information and Quiz

Volunteers accepted into the program will receive an email on May 1 with instructions and password for the volunteer orientation and quiz. Based on your assignment, you will be required to complete either one or both of the orientations. The deadline for submission will be June 1.

Please carefully review the junior volunteer orientation information. After reviewing the orientation information, please use the link provided in your orientation email from volunteer services to access the quiz.

Child Life Orientation Information and Quiz

If you are assigned to the child life department at your interview, you will also need to review the child life orientation information. After reviewing the material, use the password you were provided to access the child life orientation quiz. Please note that only child life volunteers are required to complete both orientation quizzes.

The quizzes can be completed and submitted electronically, or if you prefer, save a copy to your computer and email it to the volunteer services department at: volserv@chkd.org. You may also fax completed forms to (757) 668-8907 or send them by mail to CHKD Volunteer Services, 601 Children’s Lane, Norfolk, VA, 23507. Please note: If you plan to submit the orientation quiz electronically, you must first save the quiz to your desktop, then take the quiz and click submit.
