CHKD offers classes for kids, teens, parents and grandparents. We offer classes on many subjects and most are free of charge, but registration is required because space is limited.

You may not be able to register for all classes online, please call (757) 668-7500 or (800) 395-2453 to register or to get more information about a class.

ACL Injury Prevention Program
Research has shown that the incidence of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries in female athletes can be reduced by as much as 72-80% with proper training. Our ACL injury prevention classes for female athletes are based on researched methods of preventing ACL injuries and consist of strengthening techniques, core stabilization exercises, plyometrics (jump training), stretching, balance and coordination training. The class will also focus on proper jumping, landing and cutting techniques. The instructor is a CHKD staff physical therapist. We will perform a pre- and post-training assessment to determine improvements the athletes have made throughout the program. At the end of six weeks, the athletes will have a better chance at prevention of an ACL injury. The class meets every Tues. and Thurs. from 7:00 p.m.–8:00 p.m. The first 6 participants to send in payment will be accepted. To register mail the registration with payment.

Getting Them Back in the Game- The Role of Both Parent and Coach
Athletes of all ages and levels often return to play too soon after an injury. Coaches and parents may be unaware of the harm they can cause a player when they allow him or her to return to play too soon and/or while on pain relievers. Learn how to help them get back to playing the sport safely without further injury. A noted sports medicine expert will talk about the mistakes both parents and coaches sometimes make that may do additional harm. Discover first aid and injury prevention techniques that can make a big difference in an athlete's ability to get back into the game.
